Miley Cyrus Breakout, Transition and Film Career Launch (2008-2009)



In January 2008, after the end of the Best of Both Worlds Tour, Walt Disney pictures released the film. Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert,  3D concert film of the tour on February 1st. Although it was originally expected to be run for one week, the film earned $29 million dollars at the box office, twice the expected total which convinced Disney executives to extend the release indefinitely. The film’s soundtrack was released  by  Walt Disney/ Hollywood Records on March 11, 2008 and peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard 200.

Breakout, Miley’s second studio album was realeased on July 22, 2008. Miley co-wrote eight of the twelve songs on the album that she said was inspired by “what’s been going on in my life the past year”. Miley aspires to be a songwriter and states that it is something she wishes to do forever. The album debuted at #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and it’s lead single, “7 Things”, peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100.

Miley hosted the the 2008 CMT Music Awards along with her father., Billy Ray , in April and went on to host the 2008 Teen Choice Awards alone in August. In November, Miley provided the voice of Penny in the animated film, Bolt. She recorded a duet with John Travolta for the film that went on to receive a Golden Globe nomination. In September 2009 she participated in the single, “Just Stand Up”, for the anti-cancer campaign and also in the City of Hope Benefit to support cancer research and training programs. Along with several other Disney stars, Miley became involved in Disney’s Friends for Change and they recorded the single, “Send It On”.


Late in 2008, Miley’s representatives negotiated a deal for novelist Nicholas Sparks to write the screenplay and novel basis for a film that would introduce her to an older audience. Miley wanted to separate herself from the character of Hannah Montana  and didn’t want to be cast as a singer in yet another film. Sparks and co-writer collaborated and later developed what was to become The Last Song. Miley , along with co-writer, Hilary Liftin, wrote Miles To Go, which was a memoir chronicling her life through age sixteen in March 2009. 

Hannah Montana: The Movie, was released on April 10, 2009. Both the movie and it’s soundtrack which contained twelve songs by Miley achieved tremendous success. The soundtrack’s lead single, “The Climb”, became a top 40 hit in twelve countries and introduced Miley to audiences outside of her typical “teen” pop audience. In between this time, Miley also launched the third Hannah Montana soundtrack, recorded the extended play album, The Time of Our Lives and released  EP’s lead single, “Party in the U.S.A.”. The single debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and presented Miley with her best ever ranking on the chart.

Miley toured on her Wonder World Tour from September14, 2009 to December 29,2010 to promote both her Breakout and The Time of Our Life albums. Miley also performed for Queen Elizabeth and other members of the British Royal Family at the Royal Variety Performance in Blackpool, North West England on Dec. 7, 2009.
