Miley Cyrus Early Work (2001-2005)

Miley’s interest in pursuing an acting career began at the age of eight. It was then that she and her family moved from Tennessee to Toronto, Canada to live with her father while he filmed the television series “Doc”. Soon after the move, her father took her to the 2001 Mirvish production of “Mama Mia” at the
Royal Alexandra theater and it was there that young Miley told her father that she wanted to be an actress.
Billy Ray then enrolled her in singing and acting classes at the Armstrong Acting Studio there in Toronto.

She landed a few early roles playing a girl named Kylie on her father’s series and went on to play “Young Ruthie”, in Tim Burton’s “Big Fish”.  Miley learned  they were casting for a Disney Channel children’s television series later called, “Hannah Montana” and sent in an auditon tape for the role of the best friend of  the show’s lead, a schoolgirl with a secret double life as a teen pop star.  At those auditions Miley was told that she was to young and too small for the part, but she had already captured the eye of the show’s producer and was eventually asked back to audition for the role of the lead, “Chloe Stewart”. Miley secured that role, renamed “Miley Stewart”, at the age of twelve.

Mitchell Gossett, director of the youth division at Cunningham Escott Slevin, and well known for creating child stars had arranged for these Hannah Montana auditions and is credited with “discovering” her. Following the advice of her godmother, Dolly Parton, Miley was signed with Jason Morey of Morey Management Group to further her music career. Miley’s mother, Leticia (Tish) Ray, also continues to assist her in many of her career decisions.
